What To Expect During a Contact Lens Fitting

What To Expect During a Contact Lens Fitting

Contact lenses are a great alternative to eyeglasses. They give you a more natural appearance, an eyeglass frame or dirty lenses won't obscure your vision, and they are more convenient than glasses if you are an athlete or an active person.

If you are thinking about getting contacts, you will first need to have a contact lens fitting at Today's Vision Bulverde. If you are planning to schedule an appointment, you should know what to expect.

Prescription and Measurements

Because contacts sit directly on your eye and glasses sit about 15 millimeters away from your eyes, your eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions will be different. During your contact lens exam, your optometrist will determine your prescription. Contacts come in different sizes because everyone's eyes are different. During your visit, your eye doctor will take measurements of your eyes.

Contact Lens Options

There are many types of contacts lenses available. During your exam, your optometrist will discuss all of your options with you. Soft lenses come in dailies that are worn just once and thrown away. You can go with a one week, two weeks or a monthly lens. If your eyes are healthy enough, you can try extended lenses, which are worn for 30 days straight without needing to take them out. Your eye doctor will discuss all of your options and the benefits so you can choose the lenses that would work best for you.

Contact Lens Teaching

Before you can start wearing contacts, you will need to know how to put them in and remove them. During your exam, you will sit down with a tech who will teach you how to do this. You won't be able to wear your contacts home until you have mastered these things. The tech will also teach you how to care for your lenses properly.

Follow-Up Visit

On the day of your exam, your eye doctor will give you a pair of trial lenses to wear home. You will wear them for a week or two to make sure that you can see clearly and that they are comfortable and you will return for a follow-up appointment.
